Xzibit recently slammed commercialism in rap music.
The rapper, who is this year's host for the MTV Europe Awards (to occur November 18), recently voiced his opinion for Reuters television in Rome, urging artists to stop
glorifying violence in music.
"Hip hop went through a total stage of positivity and then it
transformed into gangster rap and then it got commercial," he said in the interview. The host of MTV's car-makeover show "Pimp My Ride," blamed the music industry for pimping the music that was once "the voice of rebellion, the voice of protest," and making it difficult for artists to survive if making music with a positive message. "The guy who just does ignorant music wins the awards and gets
the millions of music sales and that becomes defeating after a while,"
he added. "That's kind of what's forcing people to come out copying the same people over and over again."
Xzibit, whose real name is Alvin Joyner, recently joined a slew of artists who took a political stand against President Bush. His new album, Weapons of Mass Destruction, is set to drop in
December.
