Tuesday, 25 January 2005

R&B newsIndia.Arie will be one of three global female acts leading South Africa's upcoming 46664 benefit concert.

Joining Arie will be pop vocalist Annie Lennox, and U.K. performer Katie Melua. The concert's goal is to focus global attention on the plight of women and girls living with the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

The artists join the legendary British rock band Queen, along with a formidable lineup of South African artists that spans the country's diverse music genres, from kwaito to Afro-pop and Afrikaans rock. Among those domestic acts confirmed to appear are Mafikizolo, Kabelo and Mandoza as well as Prime Circle, Kabelo, Danny K, Blk Sonshine and Karen Zoid. Johnny Clegg and South African rocksters based in the States, Just Jinger are also on the bill.

46664 is Nelson Mandela’s campaign to help raise Global awareness of AIDS/HIV. The foundation's mission is to ring the clarion bell to the global crisis of AIDS/HIV through massive live events and music related initiatives.

46664 was the former President of South Africa’s prison number when he was held in captivity for 18 years on Robben Island in Cape Town.

46664 South Africa will take place at the Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate in George, a Cape coastal city. It is being underwritten by Fancourt's owner, philanthropist Professor Dr. Hasso Plattner, who is offering the venue for free.

In related news, India.Arie, Angelique Kidjo and the Marley family join a roster of international music stars in Ethiopia next month to celebrate the 60th birthday of the late reggae great Bob Marley. It will mark the first time the annual birthday celebration has been held outside the singer's native Jamaica.

The concert is scheduled to take place on Marley's birthday, February 6, in the capital, Addis Ababa, and will highlight a month of festivities starting February 1, and dubbed "Africa Unite" in tribute to one of Marley's signature songs.
