Michael Jackson Hospitalized   Print
Tuesday, 15 February 2005
Michael Jackson was taken to the hospital with what is reported to be the flu Tuesday morning (Feb. 15).

"You'll notice Mr. Jackson is not in court today," said Judge Rodney Melville, who is presiding over the singer's ongoing child molestation tria. The judge then told prospective jurors that the King of Pop had the flu and that jury selection would resume Feb. 22.

The judge made the initial announcement 15 minutes after Jackson was scheduled to appear in court at 8:30 a.m.

A spokeswoman at the Marian Medical Center where Jackson was being treated taken declined comment.

Jackson's lawyers later told the judge their 46-year-old client was feeling very ill and Melville spoke to Jackson's doctor via telephone.

The hospitalization will delay jury selection a week. Lawyers were expected back in court Tuesday to discuss unspecified motions.

On Monday, questioning of prospective jurors got under way, and Jackson's lawyers announced they may call star witnesses such as Quincy Jones, Kobe Bryant, Elizabeth Taylor and Jay Leno.

Attorneys are in the process of selecting 12 jurors and eight alternates who will decide whether Jackson molested a teenage cancer patient at his Neverland Ranch and plied the boy with alcohol.

During Monday's proceedings, the 46 year-old Jackson smiled, nodded at and attempted to make eye contact with all potential jurors, some of whom claimed to own Jackson's albums.
