Death Row Records CEO Marion 'Suge' Knight ended up in intensive care after being shot at a pre-VMA party thrown in Miami in honor of Kanye West.
According to authorities, Knight was shot in the leg around 12:42 a.m. Sunday morning at the Shore Club Hotel. The party was celebrating the release of West's next album this coming Tuesday.
The party was attended by a number of show biz luminaries including The Game, the Black Eyed Peas, Jessica Alba, Eddie Murphy, and Paris Hilton.
Knight's not life-threatening injuries included a fractured leg where a bullet lodged.
"I was dancing beside him, then I heard a pop that sounded like a champagne bottle had been opened, then I saw his bodyguards throw themselves on him," New York-based artist Lilo Kim told The Miami Herald. "It happened so fast, people were in a panic, trying to get out of there."
Reports say Knight was at a party for about 35 minutes before getting shot.
Partygoers offered conflicting accounts of the incident, but most said that Knight had exchanged words with another guest and was then shot from behind as he walked away. One shot was fired and no one else was hurt, Hernandez said.
In addition to a number of conflicting reports, authorities say many potential eye-witnesses are refusing to talk. Many say Knight had exchanged words with another guest and was then shot from behind as he walked away.
One shot was fired and no one else was hurt.
A vague police report described the shooter as a black male wearing a pink shirt.
"We are interviewing all the witnesses we can to hopefully develop a composite," Miami Beach police spokesman Bobby Hernandez said.
Since its downfall following the death of Tupac Shakur, Knight's label has not introduced a new star in nine years.
Death Row's latest release, Kurupt's Against The Grain, dropped Wednesday and has experienced poor sales. Having lost its prime Beverly Hills office space in June, Death Row is currently being run through a voicemail service.
