Jay-Z Regarding George Bush: 'I'm Backing Kanye...'   Print
Wednesday, 07 September 2005
hip-hop newsJay-Z supports the comments made by fellow emcee Kanye West who sparked a firestorm when he said "George Bush doesn't care about black people" on live television during Friday's telethon to benefit victims of Hurricane Katrina.

"I'm backing Kanye 100%," Jay-Z told Billboard. "This is America. You should be able to say what you want to say. We have freedom of speech."

West delivered an impromptu and impassioned speech making the declaration above as well as the observation that America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible."

Jay-Z says he agreed with some of West's points.

"It's really numbing," he says. "You can't believe it's happening in America. You wonder, what's going on? Why were people so slow to react? I don't understand it."

Jay-Z is currently in talks with another rap mogul, Sean "Diddy" Combs, to start a fund exclusively to aid African-Americans in times of crisis.

"Just in case anything like this happens in the future, we can do what the elder Bush and [former President Bill] Clinton are doing for our people specifically."

Both Jay-Z and Diddy have donated $1 million dollars to the Red Cross for relief efforts. They are slated to present the check at BET's telethon "SOS: Saving Ourselves" scheduled to air September 9 at 7:30 P.M. EST.
