While mega-duo Outkast plans to drop their next album in December, member Big Boi (born Antwan Patton) is working overtime as label head of his own new label called Purple Ribbon (via Virgin Records).
“I want to call Virgin home, and Purple Ribbon is the means for me to do that,” says Big Boi. “I want to put out potent funk music. Purple Ribbon is gonna be so strong you can smell it.”
With the Atlanta-based group’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below earning Grammys and a permanent place in hip-hop history, Big Boi’s latest business venture is a surefire success that is waiting to happen. With his new label, he plans to release two albums by the end of 2005. The first album to be released by his new label is the compilation aptly titled, Got Purp Vol. 2. As an introduction to his new “all-stars,” its first funk-bumpin’ single, “Kryptonite” features Big Boi himself, Killah Mike, Blackownded, C-Bone and Rock D. For the second album, Purple Ribbon plans to reintroduce Southern-fried rapper, Bubba Sparxxx.
Alongside his cohort, Andre 3000, Big Boi has been releasing quality music for years. Now, as a solo artist and a record label front man, he makes it blatantly clear that his music runs through his veins.
“This is a Big Boi thang, not an OutKast thang,” says Big Boi. “I'm doing films, but music is my first love.”
