hip-hop reviewsThe soundtrack to Dave Chapelle's Block Party is as special and moving as the film it accompanies. The flick, funded by the comedian himself, features Chappelle throwing a now legendary 2004 Brooklyn block party. Populated with artists the Comedy Central escapee admitted to idolizing, the stage witnessed the reunion of the Fugees as well as electric performances by Kanye West, Jill Scott, Common, Erykah Badu, Talib Kweli, Mos Def and more... all backed by the incomparable Roots.

Unfortunately the CD doesn't capture the full scope of that day's incredible lineup. For one there is nothing by the aforementioned Fugees, although the sight of them performing together for the first time in seven years set tongues wagging into 2005. Also not included are Kanye West, Cody Chestnut and the exciting sounds of that kick-ass CSU marching band. Musical justice surely isn't served by these omissions.

Where the 12-track set *does* excel is the capture of the day's raw energy anchored by the woefully underrated skills of the Roots. Damn that band can throw down! With Chappelle freestyling stand-up material as master of ceremonies, we're treated to the hot live sounds of Mos Def ripping up his classic "Umi Says," and the psychedelic rendition of "You Got Me," featuring both Badu and Scott. But whether it's Black Star's Def and Kweli coming together for a rare performance, or Big Daddy Kane throwing down next to Kool G Rap on the massive "Boom," underneath it all is the vibrant musicianship of the Roots combining flavors of jazz and rock with crisp percussion and no-holds-barred hip-hop substance. Simply put, the Roots talent is the star of this CD.

You may have been nowhere near Brooklyn that day, but listening to this gem will truly make you feel (and wish with all your might) you were right there on the lip of the stage as the sound quality is crystal clear and lends itself to the glorious sonic bath. Buy the CD so you can enjoy the entire "live" experience.
